Dr. Levente Juhasz

Assistant Professor of Geospatial Analytics
Geomatics Department

Dr. Juhász is a broadly trained geographer and spatial data scientist specializing in the intersection of technology and geographic space. He is an active member of the global GIScience community, having held roles such as OpenStreetMap (OSM) US Board Member, OSGeo Charter Member, editing journal special issues. As part of the Geomatics program at the University of Florida, he leads the GATOR Lab (Geospatial Analytics, Technology and Open Research), which focuses on advancing geocomputational methods, GeoAI and open science to solve complex societal challenges.

    Research
Dr. Juhász's research program and the GATOR Lab are built upon three interconnected pillars that leverage large-scale geospatial data and computational methods:
    1. Scalable Geospatial Data Science & Analytics
Leveraging high-performance computing and cloud-native technologies to overcome the analysis bottleneck of massive spatiotemporal datasets. This work focuses on developing frameworks that bring the speed and flexibility of general computing into the geospatial realm.
    2. GeoAI and Responsible Automation
Harnessing Large Language Models (LLMs), foundation models, and agentic AI for geospatial reasoning and automated mapping. This pillar critically assesses model bias, interpretability, and data ethics to establish safeguards against geographic misinformation and ensure responsible automation.
    3. Open Source, Open Data, and Societal Impact
Ensuring research transparency and community value by translating advanced methods into sustainable open-source tools and accessible data products. This work promotes a more equitable and transparent geospatial ecosystem through a commitment to reproducible science, open-source development, and open-access publishing.
