Open PhD position in Geomatics/GIS at the University of Florida Sun, 17 Dec 2017 14:28:24 +0000 Our UF Geomatics @ Fort Lauderdale research group is growing!

Please see the announcement below.

Open PhD position in Geomatics/GIS at the University of Florida

Research area: Spatio-temporal analysis of crowd-sourced Geoinformation

For over a decade, crowd-sourced data (e.g., Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), social media) have become a prime topic in the geospatial research community by helping answer societal questions across many disciplines (e.g., transportation, natural resources, tourism, natural disaster management). The field is currently undergoing rapid changes with new data sharing platforms, social media apps, and location based services on the rise. To fully access, understand, and utilize the information scattered across these platforms, advanced analysis methods of user contribution patterns and new approaches in cross-platform data fusion are needed. Crowd-sourced data also provides new opportunities for rapid event detection, data quality assessment, and data quality improvement.

The Geomatics Program at the University of Florida is seeking a PhD candidate who brings computer programming and data handling skills to advance the analysis of crowd-sourced geo-data conducted at UF.

The ideal candidate should satisfy the following requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, Statistics or other related analytical discipline
  • Experience with GIS, spatial databases (e.g., PostgreSQL/PostGIS), and Linux
  • Versatile in computer programming/scripting (e.g., Java, R, Python)
  • Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English
  • Passion for crowd-sourced and/or open data

The PhD candidate will enter an established program leading to the degree of PhD within a time frame of four years. The PhD research will be carried out at UF’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center ( located in the southeastern coastal part of Florida (near Miami). The position includes a tuition waiver, health insurance, and annual stipend.

If you are interested, please send your CV and a brief description about your motivation to apply for this position to Dr. Hartwig Hochmair at To be fully considered for the position, please have your TOEFL (when applicable) and GRE scores ready.

Applications are screened on a continuing basis. The position is expected to start in either the Summer 2018 semester (May 15) or Fall 2018 semester (Aug. 15). Early submissions are encouraged.

UF Geomatics research featured in Location Based Services proceedings Sat, 09 Dec 2017 18:25:46 +0000 Dr. Henry Hochmair, Levente Juhasz, and Sreten Cvetojevic collaborated on a peer-reviewed paper entitled “Data Quality of Points of Interest in Selected Mapping and Social Media Platforms.” The paper can found in the LBS2018: Progress in Location Based Services proceedings.

A variety of location based services, including navigation, geo-gaming, advertising, and vacation planning, rely on Point of Interest (POI) data. Mapping platforms and social media apps oftentimes host their own geo-datasets which leads to a plethora of data sources from which POIs can be extracted. Therefore it is crucial for an analyst to understand the nature of the data that are available on the different platforms, their purpose, their characteristics, and their data quality. This study extracts POIs for seven urban regions from seven mapping and social media platforms (Facebook, Foursquare, Google, Instagram, OSM, Twitter, and Yelp). It analyzes the POI data quality regarding coverage, point density, content classification, and positioning accuracy, and also examines the spatial relationship (e.g. segregation) between POIs from different platforms.
