Hypoponera punctatissima


Foraging Characteristics: Medium-sized elongate, stout looking, yellowish-brown ant.  Usually solitary. Foragers seldom seen.

Nest Sites & Characteristics: Nest in soil or under objects resting on the ground, like potted plants, bags of soil, toys. In trash piles, rotten wood, grass tussocks. Often in wet areas.

Most Common Complaints: Stinging alates which look like workers  (see drawing of worker above) with large wings. These ants are outdoor species and chemical control is usually unwarranted.

Flight Season: Warm, humid weather.

Diet:  Hunt live insects.     

Detailed Description: 2-3 mm (1/16-1/8 in) long. Worker with very small eyes, queens may have larger eyes. Jaws thick and noticeable standing out in front of head.  One-segmented petiole with large squarish knob even in height with abdomen and thorax.  Subpetiolar process small, relatively small lobe lacking a central window.  Maxillary palps 2-jointed. Subfamily Ponerinae.

Distribution: Alachua, Broward, Collier, Dade, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Jefferson, Lake, Levy, Liberty, Manatee, Martin, Monroe, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Sarasota, St. Lucie, Suzanne, Walton Counties.
