Entomology and Nematology

Bachelor of Science in Entomology and Nematology

Entomology is a biological science that emphasizes insects and related organisms. While insects are beneficial in many ways, they do cause damage by transmitting disease, damaging crops and ornamental plants, and invading homes.

Skilled entomologists are needed to assist homeowners and industry professionals with pest problems, work in government or private industry to prevent the spread of serious pests, or assist in reducing pesticide use by developing alternative pest control methods.

The entomology curriculum is divided into four specializations--pre-professional/basic sciences, biology education, plant protection, and urban pest management. One specialization is chosen based upon the interests and career goals of the student.

Pre-professional & Basic Sciences

Pre-professional Option

This option provides pre-professional preparation for programs in medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary, chiropractic, osteopathic, and podiatry colleges.

Basic Science Option

This option prepares students for entry into entomological careers and graduate school.

Biology Education Specialization

This specialization is designed for students interested in a biological sciences teaching certification. State certification requirements change so students should keep in close contact with their entomology and education advisers.

Urban Pest Management Specialization

This curriculum is designed to provide basic education for individuals desiring to enter the urban pest control profession. Students study the biology, identification and management of insects, nematodes, plant diseases, and weeds with special reference to problems in and around residential and commercial buildings. Emphasis is also given to components of business and management so that students will be prepared to assume managerial duties with a minimum of training.

Plant Protection Specialization

This specialization will enable students to receive instruction in the pest science areas of entomology, nematology, plant pathology and weed science. Emphasis is placed on understanding the plant ecosystem and the need for managing pests. The curriculum focuses on the theory and application of biological, chemical and integrated management programs for quality environments.

Students who complete the requirements for this specialization find employment in agribusiness or government agencies concerned with pest management, crop production and environmental protection. This specialization is excellent preparation for graduate study.
