Entomology & Nematology

Graduate Degrees in Entomology & Nematology

The University of Florida now offers programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in entomology and nematology at the Ft. Lauderdale Research & Education Center. All coursework and thesis work can be completed at the Center. As in the undergraduate program, class scheduling is designed to be especially convenient for working commuter students, but would also be suitable for full-time students.

Requirements for admission, completion of studies and graduation are the same as for the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in entomology and nematology at the Gainesville campus. Six faculty of the UF Department of Entomology and Nematology are located at the Center, as well as five USDA entomologists and a number of post-doctoral researchers and visiting scientists in entomology. A variety of field sites for outdoor studies are available at the Center.

The Center is particularly strong in research on the biology and management of insect and nematode pests of tropical woody ornamental plants and palms, insects and nematodes of native trees and shrubs, turf insects and nematodes, and urban and structural pest management. Biological control of insects and nematodes and of terrestrial and aquatic weeds with insects is also an area of study. Research on the ecology of aquatic insects and nematodes in connection with Everglades restoration is a potential research area that is being considered.
